It may only be October but cooler weather is quickly approaching. Pumpkin everything is popping up in stores around Central Florida and local theme parks are advertising Halloween events, even though it still thoroughly feels like summer outside. In honor of the quickly approaching fall season, we put together a list of our favorite plants for fall color. Even though most plants will quickly begin to drop their leaves and many shrubs will be bare through the winter, some plants are just now gearing up for their prettiest season. Keep a look out for these stunning plants around town:

 

Japanese Maple

These small trees are perfect as a small accent plant. They are green most of the year and in fall they turn

bright shades of red, gold, or a variety of other colors depending on the plant species.

 

 

Beautyberry

Native to Florida, these large shrubs grow purple berries in late summer or early fall.

Birds love them so if you are a bird-lover, this plant is a must.

 

 

Nandina domestica ‘Firepower’

This low maintenance, low growing shrub is green most of the year, except in late fall.

When the weather turns colder, this plant’s leaves turn red and provides the perfect

accent color for the holiday season. The colder the weather, the more colorful the plant.

 

 

Pink Muhly Grass

Green for most of the year, Muhly Grass produces long, soft pink “blooms” in fall

and will definitely catch the eye of any passerby-er.

 

Kale

This plant not only produces colorful fall leaves but many varieties are also edible

and packed with nutrients! Definitely include it in your vegetables gardens!

 

In addition to this list, there are plenty of annuals that bloom in the fall including snap dragons and pansies. Be sure to look into those for a quick pop of seasonal color. Remember that it is important that your landscape look good year round so be sure that your plants in your garden bloom at different times of year so you always have some accent color!
